Antique Alaskan Work Wear

August 30, 2019 By colleen Leave a Comment

It’s no exaggeration to say that, in this business, there is always something new to learn. I recently acquired a collection of pre-1950 Alaskan work wear. Over the years, I’ve had an occasional pair of moccasins or a Victorian black seal coat, but I’ve never had an authentic collection of Native Alaskan clothing. This collection came to me from a favorite picker who bought an old steamer trunk filled with antique Alaskan clothing and artifacts. This particular picker was most interested in the artifacts and knew he could flip the clothing to me.

Included in the collection is a wolf fur coat, men’s seal skin work pants, various pairs of fur & bead moccasins, a pair of seal skin boots, a two piece woman’s dress (the underdress is hide & fur and the overdress is cotton), a seal skin vest, numerous fur boot liners, and several handmade leather & fur belts. Pricing these pieces was challenging because there aren’t a lot of comparable items out there. So I based my pricing on two factors: my gut and my investment!

Whether or not you are interested in buying these pieces, feel free to stop in and see the collection. I’ve learned something new and now, it’s your turn!

RS Butler’s on NHPR

July 14, 2019 By colleen Leave a Comment

NHPR reached out to Antique Alley a couple of months ago with regard to their series on the history of New Hampshire’s Route 4. Todd Bookman spent time interviewing the owners of four of Antique Alley’s 18 shops including Charlie at The Betty House, Rich at Parker-French, Bill at Fern Eldridge and me (Colleen at RS Butler’s). If you’ve visited our shops, you know that we’re all very different but we also have a lot in common and these things are highlighted in this piece. Here’s a link to the interview.

Only in New Hampshire!

Thanks to a friend who forwarded the link, we just found out that we have been featured in a new article on onlyinyourstate.com ! It was so nice to read a piece that truly captures the the spirit of our shop! The writer took lots of pictures as she explored the shop, the barn, and our garden antiques area. So if you haven’t been in a while and you’re wondering what we’ve been up to, check out the May 17 article by Catherine Armstrong. She describes us a “Retro Superstore” and we think that sums up our vibe perfectly!

Garden Antiques!

April 28, 2019 By colleen Leave a Comment

Despite the cold & rainy weather, we’ve been hard at work setting up our garden antiques! Cast iron urns, cement statuary, patio sets, bird baths, trellises & arbors–we’ve got you covered! We are on the hunt for garden antiques year-round so we bring in new pieces all the time. But feel free to check in with us if you’re looking for something specific. Happy Spring!

Ahhhh Spring!

In changing out Fall/Winter vintage clothing for Spring/Summer, we found that we had more inventory than we realized so we changed up the vintage clothing room and added another rack. We have a beautiful array of dresses, blouses, jackets, and sweaters including a great selection of authentic vintage Hawaiian pieces that we have been hoarding just for you! It’s so nice to see all the pretty colors. We know you’ll have fun looking thru the inventory (we have lots of back-up stock)! Yay Spring!

Itching for Spring!

If you’ve been in our shop before, you know we have a passion for old garden pieces. We hunt for garden antiques year-round but we are especially focused on the hunt in the winter. Antique urns are becoming increasing hard-to-find but that doesn’t stop us–we just have to hunt harder and travel farther! We are currently stocking up (hoarding) cast iron urns, cast iron gates, patio furniture, trellises, arbors, bird baths, and statues. If you have pieces that you are interested in selling, let us know. And if you’re looking for garden antiques, check back–our garden area will be set up as soon as weather permits!

The hustle never stops!

There are some New Hampshire shops that are seasonal but we are definitely NOT one of them! We are on the hunt 24-7-365 (as evidenced by the inventory I squashed into my van yesterday). We are open daily year-round and we are determined to bring in new inventory every single day so that our customers can enjoy a unique shopping experience each time they come in.

Yesterday’s house call took us to the home of some folks who are downsizing in preparation for a move. Their collection includes more than 30 butter churns and 50 pieces of antique lighting. Yesterday, we bought a beautiful dry sink, a small butcher block, and an old wooden wheelbarrow (yes, spring is coming). We will be heading back in another week or so to pick up a jelly cupboard and a hatbox dresser, along with the first batch of butter churns and lighting.

So don’t let the weather fool you! For us, the hustle never stops!

Holiday & Winter Hours

December 12, 2018 By colleen Leave a Comment

Just a quick update with regard to holiday & winter hours.

  • We are open year-round, 7 days a week from 10-5:00 (and the barn is open year-round as well so dress warmly).
  • We will be open on Christmas Eve but we will be closing at 3:00; we will be closed on Christmas Day.
  • We will be open on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day.
  • We base our snowstorm closures (as well as late openings and early closings) on the condition of our parking lot. We don’t open until we are plowed & shoveled and we close early if a storm is making our parking area slippery & unsafe. Don’t hesitate to call before you come!

We wish you all Happy Holidays and we look forward to seeing you this season!

A Peek at Our Storage!

October 13, 2018 By colleen Leave a Comment

If you’ve been in our shop, you’ve probably heard us ask “Are you looking for anything special?” We always ask because our third barn, not accessible to the public, is full of back up inventory. This Gone with the Wind-style settee is just one example of the furniture that is waiting for a spot in one of our main buildings. So if you are “on a mission” and you don’t see what you’re looking for, be sure you to ask!

As Ned Stark would say, “Winter is Coming…”

September 30, 2018 By colleen Leave a Comment

Yes, winter is coming and much of our garden inventory will be going (into storage, that is). We generally wait for the leaves to fall before start storing & stacking so don’t procrastinate if there’s something in our outside area that you’ve been considering! We will keep some urns and planters accessible for holiday greens but we will be putting away much of our other outside farm & garden inventory. (And by the way, this is a great time to negotiate pricing on our outside inventory.)
